I...I'm not sure Nicholas was ever London based. I knew him well when he had his Normandy chateau - his wife was French and a local politician - and he stayed with my wife and I in Westminster on both occasions with his professional relationship with Boris. Sure, he and Tarkovsky had differences but there was a long standing and respectful friendship.<br /><br />We had many, many discussions, sometimes sober, sometimes not, in Normandy and in London, about Tarkovsky's work. The respect was self evident. You are right on Nicholas' gregarious love of life - his bear of a dog was called Ghengis - he was a wonderful friend and I regret not being able to attend his funeral.
